The Early Talk 0-3 programme has a number of training packages. The learning outcomes of both, contribute to a range of competencies at the Universal Stage of the Speech Language and Communication Framework (SLCF):
Working with Children Under 3 - Speech, Language and Communication
This half day training course is designed to support any practitioner working with children aged between 0 and 3 years and their families, to develop an awareness of speech, language and communication (SLC) and the features that help to identify whether a child has SLC needs. The aims of the course are to:
- Describe the development of speech, language and communication skills in children under 3 years
- Understand the processes of communication up to and beyond first words
- Identify risk factors which impact on the development of communication skills
- Understand the role practitioners play in supporting speech, language and communication development in children aged 0-3 years.
- Be able to gather information regarding any difficulties along with knowledge of when and where to refer.
Working with Children Under 3 - Positive Approaches and Strategies to Support Speech, Language and Communication in Early Years Settings
This half day training course is designed to support early years practitioners working with children aged between 0 and 3 years in an early years establishment. It covers approaches and strategies to promote the development of good communication skills in all children. The aims of the course are to:
- Understand the relationship between play, cognition and language development
- Identify the stages of play development and its links with language acquisition
- Be able to use a range of strategies to support all children’s communication development.
- Gain ideas on activities which can develop language and play within an everyday play environment
Participants need to have completed 0-3 Speech, Language and Communication training as a prerequisite to undertaking this course. It is recommended that both parts of the training are delivered over 1 day.
Parents in Partnership for Early Communication Development
This one day training course is designed for family support practitioners to enhance parental support of early communication development. It includes some systems for supporting family support practitioners involved in Healthy Child reviews.
The aims of the course are to gain an understanding of:
- Adult behaviours that affect children’s communication development.
- Practitioner behaviours that affect Parents’ support of their child’s communication development.
- Practitioner techniques for supporting Healthy Child Programme reviews
