Learning to Talk, Talking to Learn DVD
Learning to Talk, Talking to Learn is a new early learning resource for childcare practitioners.
Presented by Dr Tanya Byron from the House of Tiny Tearaways and Little Angels, Learning to Talk has been jointly produced by the BT Better World Campaign and I CAN as part of the Make Chatter Matter campaign. Make Chatter Matter aims to highlight the importance of children’s speech and language as the foundation for all learning and social development.
The self-study resource supports all workers in the early years including child minders, playgroup co-ordinators, pre-school teachers and nursery nurses to create communication-rich environments. The resource includes tips and examples of how early years professionals can turn every activity in their setting into a communication development opportunity.
What sets this resource apart is a series of observation sequences to give practitioners the opportunity to view and note how early years workers have seized opportunities for speech and language development in their setting. The video sequences were filmed in a childminder setting with children between eight months to five, a setting for one to three-year-olds and a nursery for three to five-year-olds. The sequences show the staff naturally interacting with children during their everyday activities. The viewer is encouraged to analyse what the early years worker is doing to encourage speech, language and communication development in a mixture of child-led activities and group time. Subsequent playback of the sequences with narration by an early years expert highlights the interactions in that area supporting speech, language and communication development. The expert also points out the various stages of children’s speech, language and communication development. This provides practitioners with the opportunity to compare their notes with those of the expert.
Learning to Talk also includes a career development segment and a kid’s karaoke segment presented by children’s entertainer Kevin Duala. The Children’s Commissioner Professor Sir Al Aynsley-Green and Toxic Childhood author Sue Palmer also discuss the importance of communication on the resource. The DVD will be accompanied by an online workbook to support the practitioner using the DVD as a study aid. It will also include two posters. One will include the stages of early communication development and the second will include tips for supporting speech and language. Those who successfully complete Learning to Talk will receive a special certificate.
Learning to Talk can be viewed individually or within a group setting.
