The Communication Cookbook

The Communication Cookbook is a resource book of activities to support children’s language and communication. Developed by I CAN and the BT Betterworld Campaign, it focuses on five essential ingredients that support children’s communication skills, and contains simple recipes to help parents and teachers to develop these in skills in children. The five essential ingredients are:

  • Attention and Listening 
  • Vocabulary 
  • Building Sentences 
  • Story Telling
  • Conversations

On the Cookbook section of Talking Point you will find downloadable PDFs of the activities in the Cookbook, and some great online games. Before you access the activities, you must register and log in.

Primary Schools in the UK can order a single free copy. The Communication Trust will fund the distribution to schools in England for a limited time only.

Learning to Talk

A DVD resource developed by I CAN and the BT Better World Campaign. The self-study resource supports all workers in the early years including child minders, playgroup co-ordinators, pre-school teachers and nursery nurses to create communication-rich environments. The resource includes tips and examples of how early years professionals can turn every activity in their setting into a communication development opportunity. Learning Together: Working Together

School TalkSchool Talk

The School Talk DVD/CD ROM is a multimedia package of key strategies for all staff working with children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) at Key Stage 2. The DVD is designed as training and information resource to provide practical ways to ensure children are properly supported and included in school life. The pack includes a 30 minute DVD and CD-ROM including trainer's manual, overheads and participant's notes.

Joint Professional Development Framework

This CD ROM contains all the materials you need to deliver training on the foundation level of the JPDF.

There are five units of work, each of which contains:

  • Notes for Tutors
  • Notes for Participants
  • Handouts and resources
  • PowerPoint Presentation Slides

Each unit can be delivered as twilight or all five as a two-day training event.
