This report examines how children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) are at a major disadvantage compared to their peers in primary schools. They have to learn in an environment where the medium for learning is their major weakness.

It is vital that everyone working with children and young people has a clear understandaing of the relevance of speech, language and communication development and needs for their work. This I CAN Talk report which is supported by The Communication Trust highlights this relevance. It then considers the importance of communication development and impact of SLCN

This I CAN report, supported by the BT Better World campaign, summarises, for the first time, the links between speech, language and communication and social exclusion. The report identifies speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) as the missing link in the social exclusion chain.

This report gives fresh insights into an emerging 21^st century problem: impoverished language. It is the most contemporary synthesis of evidence on communication development and the impact on future life chances to date.

This report follows on from I CAN’s The Cost to the Nation of Children’s Poor Communication and provides additional information and cost analysis related specifically to the Scottish context.
