The Primary Talk training is across 3 levels and designed to meet the competencies specified in the Speech, Language and Communication Framework (SLCF). Find out more here.
The SLCF is a clear, comprehensive framework of the competences required by practitioners to support speech, language and communication skills in children and young people. The SLCF is an interactive online tool to enable anyone who works with children to carry out an evaluation of their current skills and knowledge. It can be accessed on www.communicationhelppoint.org.uk
Primary Talk training is flexible. Where staff have undertaken alternative development activities with the same objectives, there will not be a requirement for them to duplicate aspects already covered.
The training can be directly delivered by I CAN in schools or used as a cascade training package. Cascade training involves a nominated staff member which can be the headteacher, deputy headteacher, SENCo or class teacher attending a days training which then enables them to deliver the information to their staff team.
The training can be delivered flexibly for example three twilight sessions, during an inset day.
The Primary Talk training materials consist of:
- Training manual including tutors’ notes and a participants’ pack
- Powerpoint presentations
- Handouts
- CD-Rom
To attain each of the three levels of accreditation, all teachers and 80% of other staff will need to have specified competencies relating to speech, language and communication.
Primary Talk training enables school staff to gain competencies at the Universal, Enhanced and Specialist levels of the SLCF.
