Primary Talk accredits schools at one of three levels – Supportive (Universal), Enhanced and Specialist.
There is a common framework across each level and the standards are divided into six sections:
- Management support – recognises the importance of putting communication supportive practice at a strategic level of development in the school.
- Knowledge and understanding – this area reflects the importance of developing all staffs skills and knowledge to meet the speech language and communication needs of all pupils.
- Curriculum and learning environment – these standards assist the school to audit how they have adapted the physical environment, the teaching and learning styles of staff and the social environment for the pupils.
- Effective collaboration – this enables a school to consider what processes they have for collaboration with parents and external professionals
- Identification, assessment and response – supports schools to have processes in place to identify pupils communication needs and to make an appropriate response.
- Monitoring and evaluation – this section helps schools consider if they have effective systems in place to both track the progress of pupils and also to take into account the views of stakeholders about the effectiveness of communication supportive practice to influence future school development and action plan setting.
The Primary Talk accreditation package includes:
- Introduction; - A guide to implementation; - Accreditation standards; - Resources; - Bibliography; - Glossary of terms
The package is flexible and available on a CD-Rom which enables the materials to be printed and the standards and other working documents to be completed electronically.
For accreditation schools submit a completed audit review and gather portfolio evidence prior to an accreditor visit:
Supportive: Teacher or speech and language therapist will visit the school for 1 day Enhanced: Teacher and speech and language therapist visit the school for 1 day Specialist: Teacher and speech and language therapist visit the school for 2 days.
At each level schools receive verbal feedback at the end of the visit and a follow up written report containing a development plan.
