2013 was I CAN’s 125th Anniversary. We stand proudly today as an organisation established over 125 years ago to support vulnerable children – a vision still upheld.
For the past 60 years I CAN has worked to ensure that all children can communicate to the best of their ability, and to make sure that children who have speech, language and communication difficulties have their needs recognised and addressed.
However, there is still more to do. The number of children reported with poor speech, language and communication has increased 72 per cent in five years and we know it is a particular issue for children in disadvantaged communities. Developing children’s language skills has been identified as key to breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty.
Therefore communication skills are essential for all children to develop from a very early age to improve their life chances. In our 125th Anniversary year, we called on government to address children’s poor communication as a 21st century public health issue. Read more here.
