What is Primary Talk?

Primary Talk is a training* and accreditation programme that supports the communication development of all primary aged children, including those with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). Primary Talk has been shown to have a substantial impact on classroom practice and can help schools improve pupil outcomes.

What is Primary Talk Accreditation?

Developing good communication skills is the foundation to supporting children’s educational progress and social development. Schools that take an active approach to integrating communication throughout the new primary curriculum can support all children to develop their language skills, which helps children to become active learners.

Primary Talk Accreditation is a tool for whole school improvement. It provides Good Practice Indicators to help schools review their provision and identify areas to develop further, with practical ideas for ways of supporting this development in order to create an environment that improves language and communication skills for all children.

As a result of this development schools will be able to demonstrate improved outcomes for all children – this evidence can be submitted to gain accredited status. I CAN accredited schools have clearly shown that they are capable of providing effective school based provision for all children including those with speech, language and communication needs.

What is the Accreditation process?

Schools will be required to complete the Accreditation Evidence Form showing how they have improved outcomes in speech, language and communication for children in a number of specific ways. The Evidence Form (and any supporting documents) will be submitted to the I CAN Primary Talk Accreditation Panel (comprised of specialist advisory SLTs and teachers) for assessment.

We recommend that schools take advantage of an I CAN licenced mentor, as they can provide tailored support throughout the whole school development and accreditation process. If you do not have access to a licensed mentor in your area, I CAN Advisors can provide this support.

Primary Talk Accreditation operates at three levels:

  1. A Communication Supportive school has the resources and staff with the skills and knowledge to support all children's communication development, providing a communication supportive environment for learning and development representing quality-first teaching, and the knowledge and ability to identify children who require additional support.
  2. A Communication Enhanced school meets the criteria at the Supportive level for a communication supportive environment and has the resources and staff with the skills and knowledge to provide an inclusive environment for children with SLCN, working collaboratively with local experts.
  3. A Communication Specialist school delivers high quality integrated speech and language therapy and education for children with the most severe and complex SLCN. Services at this level can demonstrate collaborative multi-disciplinary practice that benefits children with severe, complex and persistent SLCN – and their parents.
