This section is organised into age groups to help you find the information that is most appropriate for each child. You will find information about how children typically develop communication skills as well as interesting articles about different ways that you can support children and young people's communication development. Remember - children develop at slightly different rates, but if you are at all concerned, find out what you can do.

This section also includes information about how speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) can have an impact on other areas of a child's life, such as friendships, behaviour and issues relating to education in pre-school settings and schools.

There is additional information about relevant topics in education, for example, some of the terminology used in schools and pre-school settings, bullying and information on assessments, tests and transitions. In some age ranges, there is also information about some materials that have been developed by BT, focusing on communication with children and young people. You can find out about resources, books and websites about communication development and SLCN.
