Description
Dyslexia Action is the UK's major charity supporting individuals with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. It was founded in 1972 and is now the largest dyslexia charity in the world. It assesses and teaches dyslexic learners, trains specialist teachers, develops materials and conducts research. Dyslexia Action works nationally with the Government and the education sector to ensure best provision and support for dyslexic people in this country. And it remains close to the people its serves through schools and communities and employers. It has 27 main centres and over 140 smaller teaching units throughout the UK and is continuously working to increase its outreach. Dyslexia affects up to 10% of the UK population to varying degrees, 4% being severely affected. It is an inherited neurological condition that predominately affects literacy, but numeracy, memory and organisational skills may also be affected. Dyslexia can have serious social implications and can severely affect the individual's self-esteem and confidence.
