Leave a Legacy

A simple action can speak volumes

A legacy gift from you will enable us to continue our work and give children and voice for years to come. Leaving a gift in your will is an easy and effective way to support I CAN. You don't have to chose between family and charity. However large or small, your gift will help future generations to achieve their full potential.

How to leave a gift

Whatever stage you are in making your will, if you decide to leave a gift to I CAN we recommend you speak to a solicitor. A solicitor can easily arrange for you to include a charitable bequest in your will, but there are a few keys facts you should be aware of:

Types of Legacy Gift:

There are many different types of legacy gift. Three of the main ones are:

Residuary bequest

A gift made of the remainder of your estate after all other gifts have been handed out and debts paid off. To do this you may leave either the total of the remainder or a percentage. With a residuary gift you can ensure that your family and loved ones are looked after first whilst still leaving something to a good cause.

Pecuniary bequest

A gift made of a fixed sum of money. Unfortunately, the value of a pecuniary gift will decrease over time, as the cost of living increases.

Specific bequest

A particular named item left as a gift in your Will. For example, a piece of jewellery, furniture or a painting.

Information Your Solicitor Will Need

Your solicitor will need to following information:

Charity name and address: I CAN, 8 Wakley Street, London, EC1V 7QE

Registered charity number: 210031

Your solicitor should know the correct wording for your Will or Codicil. However, take these specimen legacy clauses with you when you see your solicitor this will save time.

Codicil

Alternatively, you can use a Codicil form to make and addition to your existing will. Please click here to download a Codicil.

Inheritance Tax

Under current legislation, if your estate is worth more than the nil-rate band (which varies each tax year and is currently £312,000), your beneficiaries will have to pay Inheritance Tax of 40% on anything beyond this threshold.

Currently charitable bequests are not usually subject to Inheritance Tax and this means that if you leave a legacy to I CAN all of your gift will reach us. Your solicitor can advise you about ways to minimise the impact of Inheritance Tax.

If you have already included a gift to I CAN in your will

Thank you for supporting us in this special way. Please be assured that your gift will be used efficiently and with care, sensitivity and respect.

If you would like to let us know that you are leaving us a gift, we would love to hear from you – but you don’t have to and we understand that it is a private matter.

Any information you give us will remain confidential and you have the absolute right to change your mind about your gift at any time.

In Memoriam Donations

Many people request that family and friends make a donation to their favourite charity instead of sending flowers at a funeral. You can include this instruction in your will or let relatives know of your wish.

“I worked for some years as a speech and language therapist with pre-school children and realised the devastating effect speech and language disorder can have on children's development of literacy and social skills.

I feel that there will be an ongoing need for organisations such as I CAN.”

– Caroline, who has remembered I CAN in her will
