Many children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) can succeed in mainstream education, particularly where schools embrace collaborative working arrangements and pupils have access to the specialist staff and resources they need. However, some children with a severe or complex SLCN require specialist placement for some or all of their education. I CAN's schools provide a balance of support and challenge that encourages pupils to make progress in all areas of the curriculum. The individual needs of young people are assessed, met, monitored and reviewed within a consultative framework that includes the young people and their parents as well as professionals. I CAN has two special schools which together provide intensive support for pupils aged 4-19: As well as supporting children directly within their settings, I CAN schools also support the parents and families of these children, provide outreach to mainstream, facilitate academic research and provide an assessment service for local authorities and for parents.
