Creating communication supportive environments for all children.

Primary Talk

What is Primary Talk?

Primary Talk is a training and development programme that supports the communication development of all primary aged children, including those with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). The Primary Talk School Toolkit is a resource to help schools develop the important area of speech, language and communication. These spoken language skills are an essential part of learning and development, and are best addressed through a whole school approach.

Primary Talk Training is an evidence-informed whole school training programme at universal (Supporting Communication) and targeted (Enhancing Communication) levels for staff working with children aged 5-11.

Primary Talk training can help schools to create an environment that develops the speech and language skills of all children, and ensures effective school based provision for children with SLCN. It improves staff knowledge and understanding of speech, language and communication and embeds learning through follow-up activities and a personal action plan.

Primary Talk training is aimed at teachers, teaching assistants, SENCOs and school staff who have an active role in the classroom and is offered at two levels.

Primary Talk   - Supporting Communication

Who is it for?

A course for those working with primary school children giving staff the skills needed to create a communication supportive environment and identify those with speech, language and communication needs.

What will I learn?

The training will enable participants to develop their knowledge and understanding of typical development in speech, language and communication; ideas and strategies to support all pupils’ spoken language skills; and an introduction to identifying pupils with SLCN.

Primary Talk   - Enhancing Communication

Who is it for?

A course which builds on existing speech, language and communication knowledge and skills for those working with primary school children and also aims to develop skills to support children with SLCN.

What will I learn?

The training will enable participants to increase their existing knowledge of speech language and communication needs of primary school children and adapt a range of approaches and strategies to create an enhanced communication supportive environment for children with speech, language and communication needs.

How is this training delivered to you?

We will deliver training in your workplace. If you are a small school you might wish to consider grouping your staff together with another school for the training and sharing the costs between yourselves.

How does Primary Talk support the Ofsted framework?

Primary Talk can support schools to develop outstanding practice in communication by:

  • Developing the spoken language skills that support learning across the curriculum, including reading and writing
  • Providing staff with a range of classroom strategies that focus on developing listening and attention skills, vocabulary and the use of visual tools to support spoken language
  • Developing pupils’ behaviour for learning by helping staff to identify those children whose underlying communication difficulties lead to poor behaviour
  • Developing the social aspects of learning – making friends, working in groups, and building relationships.
